Hollywood lawyer Martin Singer has denounced the accusations against Cosby that he's a serial rapist and raised questions about the credibility of some of the two-dozen accusers.
He put out a short statement late Friday calling into question the claims of the latest accuser, Chloe Goins, 24.
Goins and her lawyer went to the Los Angeles police on Wednesday seeking a criminal investigation into an alleged encounter she had with Cosby at a party at the Playboy Mansion in 2008 when she was 18.
She says she accepted a drink from him, passed out and woke up to find herself naked and Cosby licking her toes and masturbating
Singer said the party Goins referred to was the Midsummer Night 's Party, which took place on on August 9, 2008.
"Mr. Cosby was in New York on that date," Singer's statement said. "We will be providing documentary evidence to the appropriate authorities which conclusively establishes Mr. Cosby's whereabouts on August 9th and for the preceding and succeeding days."
Through Singer, Cosby has denied the accusations since they reemerged in force in November.He has never been charged with a crime.
In response to Singer, Goins' Florida attorney, Spencer Kuvin, said he wants to see the evidence Singer referred to.
"Additionally, the press should be asking Mr. Singer to prove where Mr. Cosby was the entire summer for 2008 and if he ever attended a party at the mansion that summer," Kuvin said. "Finally, if that is true, why was Mr. Singer asking the Playboy mansion to look for security video?"
Cosby's legal team has been investigating the credibility of some of his accusers. Accuser Judy Huth, for instance, who claims Cosby raped her at the Playboy Mansion in 1974 when she was underage, hired women's rights attorney Gloria Allred and filed a civil suit against Cosby last month.
Soon, Singer was striking back at her in court, accusing her of trying to extort Cosby for a quarter-million dollars in exchange for her silence. He also asserted that Huth tried to sell her story to a tabloid a decade ago.
Cosby's wife, Camille, has complained publicly that the media have failed to properly "vet" her husband's accusers by, for instance, seeking records on whether they've been arrested.
But most of the media have stayed away from those inquiries on the grounds that they're irrelevant to whether the accusers were raped by Cosby decades ago.
It's possible Goins could have gotten her dates mixed up, but her case appears to be the most recent — only six years ago — and therefore could possibly fall within the California statute of limitations. For most of the accusers, it's no longer possible to prosecute; some of them assert they were drugged and raped by Cosby as early as the 1960s.
Meanwhile, Cosby continues on his current stand-up tour, scheduled to perform in Buell, Colo., on Saturday. He told ticket-holders in a statement Thursday that he's "far from finished."
